The Spirit of Canoa

One of the reasons I decided to start shooting video was that I have never really felt like my writing has reflected the spirit of where I stay.

Sure I can share the photos and explain stories of people I meet but something is always missing. I loved Cuenca and wished I could have captured it better.

I haven’t really been doing much of anything in Canoa. I’ve spent most days on the beach, meeting locals, making friends and learning about the food.

It’s different than in the Andes, there’s no cuy here that I can see because it’s the cost. Instead you’ll find bolon de verde, ceviche and encebollado.

I’ve been here so long some of the kids run up to me shouting my name.

Friends ask if I’ll be out that night for drinks and I have this crazy dog I call señor Loco, who excitedly barks like crazy as he follows me around.

I really love it here.

But it’s hard to share all of this in words, how waking up each day makes me smile. I somehow hope this video helps explains it all.

  2. Honestly, I could tell by your writing that you love it. Sometimes, with peoples’ writing, it doesn’t come out. But, you definitely have a gratitude towards it. =)

I’ve never thought about visiting Ecuador before, but now that I’ve had friends say how wondeful it is – and watching your fab videos – it’s moving close to the top of the travel bucket list!

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

You should definitely go, it’s not as polished from a tourism perspective but I think that’s what makes it so great.

  4. Lovely video 🙂 It definitely seems that you truly do love it there. So are you never going home then?

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

Sadly I do have to go home. I only have a 3 month visa here.

  6. Very very fun video. I can see why it makes you smile, it made me smile too! I’ll be finally utilizing my videography and filmmaking past to make travel videos and you are totally inspiring me, so thank you. Btw, how do you find such rad music to use?

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

Thanks so much Ryan, I spend hours and hours on Jamendo.com looking for good music. It’s out there but sometimes hidden, but finding the right song could be my favourite part of the process.

  7. Nice work Ayngelina… I’ve dabbled with video, and can appreciate how much more time consuming it is, compared to photography. However, the results, as you demonstrate – can be really worth it. Hope to see more!

Your photos are amazing, I’m not sure if you need to move to video. For me I just couldn’t express what I was seeing. Check out my latest one – Los Pescadores, it’s an example of what I really want to move toward.

Some work friends and I once saw a guesthouse for sale in Canoa on the internet. The place seemed so appealing that we talked, semi-seriously, about going in together and buying it site unseen. Maybe we should have!

    1. Ayngelina Author says:

Well there is one still up for sale there. But honestly I don’t know if I would ever buy anything down there. It is so easy to rent and if something goes wrong you can just pick up and leave.
