An Unfussy Approach to Wine

The more time I spend in Grey Bruce County the more I realize it’s almost like medicine for living in the city. We take things far too seriously, get caught up in hype that doesn’t really matter and sometimes you lose sight of the small things that really do matter.

Watch a Day at Hoity Toity Cellars

So a day at Hoity Toity Cellars was the perfect intervention. Normally visiting a winery can be quite a serious thing. You sit and listen to the winemaker, they talk to you about the process, about pairing wine and how to drink it.

Hoity Toity Cellars takes a different approach. Gary and Diane keep in mind they are farmers first. This sets the tone for a very laid back day that isn’t about fussy appearances but having a relaxing day, enjoying good wine and hanging out with the many dogs and sheep that wander the grounds.

If you love cider this is the place to visit as they also make fantastic cider. As a region that produces 75% of Ontario’s apples, Grey County has a history of cider and yet much of this tradition was lost over the years.

If you have the time and want to know more about cider Gary is passionate about sharing it… and sharing all of it…beginning with the 1900s. Diane will step in to make sure Gary isn’t talking your ear off but he’s so energetic about sharing it that you will get sucked into the story. Make sure you have a good 45 minutes because there is lots to share and a lot to laugh about.

But a visit to Hoity Toity is a reminder that you can be intelligent, passionate and hardworking without being a snobby jerk. Something we all need to be reminded about from time to time.

Disclosure: I spent the day at Hoity Toity to shoot a video for Grey Bruce County, but as always opinions are my own. When you visit Hoity Toity Cellars ask Gary to tell you the original name of 66 Pickup. It’s a great story.

I want to go here! And drink all this wine! I love this approach. It reminds me of how you and I always end up loving super cheap wines haha.

  3. This sounds like my kind of place! I hate it when places expect you to spend more money basically because they’re pretentious. I’m planning a hen party at the moment and trying to persuade the mum of the bride that you don’t have to go to the Ritz and spend £50 or more to enjoy an afternoon tea. When it comes to wine, though, I’ll take anything!

  4. Thanks for the tip! I love Ontario cider. Love the sheep pic too!
