One the reasons I travel is food and there are so many delicious porky foods in Ecuador.

This being my second time in Ecuador, I had already eaten cuy when my mother and sister visited and now alone could concentrate on my one true love – pig.

23 DELICIOUS DISHES TO TRY: Ecuadorian Food

Ecuadorians have won my heart my finding many ways to eat pigs and while the list could be endless, I have shared the ones I love the most:

Don’t Miss These Amazing Porky Foods in Ecuador

Hornado - pork in Ecuador

Hornado

There’s nothing better than seeing an entire roasted pig being picked apart for my eating pleasure.

In Cuenca there is so much! Here I enjoyed roasted pig atop mote with a side of salad, llapingacho and crispy pork skin for only $2.

Where: You can find it everywhere but I recommend the second floor of Mercado 10 de Agosto.

There are a dozen vendors and they’re all fantastic.

Ecuador pork sandwich

Pernil Sandwiches

True you can get this in any country but Ecuadorians sandwiches put other pork sandwiches to shame.

Here you can get a shaved pernil or pavo (turkey) sandwich for $1.20. And it’s not the Instant Pot turkey kind but slow cooked and served with spicy aji. Wash it down with a glass of coconut juice.

STUFFED PLANTAIN RECIPE: Bolon de Verde

Where: Head to the corner of Calle Miguel Angela Estrella and Juan Jaramillo, which should be known as pork corner as all the corners have pork sandwiches. You can’t go wrong with any of them.

This sandwich is from Soda Bar “Piedad” there’s no sign outside but inside it’s crowded.

morcilla Ecuadorian food

Morcilla

Sausages are delicious but Ecuadorians take it one step further by filling them with rice and vegetables.

Where: The best ones are on the way to see Rogelio but if you’re not going to see him a good runner-up is the Mercado 10 de Agosto.

Ecuador My Favorite Hot Dog

Hot Dogs

Who doesn’t want a little pork on pork action?

So hot dogs can be found throughout all of Latin America but this was the first time I had experienced the genius of shredded hot dog on hot dog.

Forget ketchup and mustard, the condiment of choice here is the delicious aji.

23 EXOTIC:
Ecuador Fruits

Where: My Favorite Hot Dog on Jaramillo is a walk-up restaurant where you order through a window on the street.

The stand is only available at night and there’s often a line-up, make sure you don’t arrive too late because when the aji is gone it’s gone.

salchipapas

Salchipapas

At first I thought this was hot dog on fries but I learned that it was Vienna sausage on fries and somehow that changed my mind from being disgusting to absolutely delicious.

Where: Any little shop that sells hotdogs but never in a bar no matter how many beer you have had. It’s not as good.

mote in Ecuador

Mote con Chicharron

Better than basic hominy, the addition of other types of corn as well as chicharrón, onion and a creamy dressing makes this a great snack in between porky meals.

Where: You can find street vendors selling this everywhere.

And with that, my arteries need a bit of a break from these amazing foods in Ecuador. I’ll be eating salad for the next while.

  5. turkey's for life says:

Ayngelina, how could you!!? Fully agree with you that pork is the best meat ever but we really do struggle to get hold of it here. The photos are great – love the pig’s head! Think Ecuador may have to be put on our list of places to go – if only for a pork fest!

  6. Mmmm…shredded hot dog on hot dog? That’s something I would think you could only find in NORTH America. These dishes sure look yummy – I especially like the Morcilla, which I’ve had elsewhere but I’m sure it’s better in Ecuador.

  7. Chris - The Aussie Nomad says:

I’ve only just finished breakfast and I’m drooling over those pictures.

  8. Oh. Wow. Shredded hot dog on hot dog looks A.MA.ZING. My bro is a pig farmer in England – I might suggest some of these ideas to him, and bring a little taste of Ecuador to the Westcountry. Oh arr.

  9. You post has me salivating. I’m glad you found some salchipapas that were edible. In Peru, they are not IMHO. By the way, the best dish I had in South America, hands down, was Lechon during All Saints Dayin Cusco. Tender, juicy, smoky and flavorful.
    Thanks for sharing some pork!

  14. The NVR Guys says:

Salsa de Aji is simply one of the most delicious condiments in the entire world. If we could make it here in the states, we could be rich. Actually, the family who did our laundry had us over for dinner and taught us how to make it. We just can’t get the ingredients state-side. =(

  15. There’s so much I missed when I was in Ecuador! Where are the guinea pigs? Do they count as pork? I didn’t try them when I was there, I just couldn’t do it.

  16. I’m with Melvin. It is lunch time for me and this food looks really good! Just make sure you have something for the heartburn later! 🙂

  17. Great looking food. I’m hungry 🙂

  18. These photos and descriptions reminds me so much of Bali, one of the few places in Indonesia where pork is not frowned upon. We stopped at this roadside stand and ate pork prepared in a variety of ways. So incredibly good. These are awesome photos and make me really hungry even though I just ate lunch.

  19. Shredded hot dog? That’s definitely something I haven’t seen before!

  20. Jill - Jack and Jill Travel The World says:

I don’t eat pork (or meat), but I do like the sound of that aji. Not sure what it is, but if it’s spicy — I like it!

  21. Migrationology says:

Pig is definitely a food group I consider precious, and smothered in some aji, it’s incredible. I especially want that whole roasted Hornado!

  26. La Tortuga Viajera says:

Your love of pig would make the Spaniards so proud! Have you tried cochinillo in Spain? It’s suckling pig that is so tender that they cut it with a plate….but I bet you already knew that.
