Day 344: Mollendo, Peru
I realized after the last few posts that some readers were worried that my trip had been challenging lately and I wasn’t having fun.
I’m not a doom and gloom type of person and had only been sharing the negative because it challenged me and made me reflect.
Interspersed in those days were great people, conversations and delicious food – but let’s face it, writing about how great your life is gets a little old.
But since you asked for it I wanted to share the details of the last week to reassure you that I’m not drowning in disdain.
After surviving the last day of Carnaval with Mica, we decided to stay in Mollendo for the week.
My days have been breezy.
I work on the site for a couple of hours in the morning while Mica sleeps in and then we head to the market for a breakfast of freshly squeezed orange juice, local Peru fruit and fried fish.
Afterwards we make our way to the beach and spend the day trying to delicately balance avoiding cancer with SPF 45 and still getting a tan with some kind of Peruvian tan activation cream.
Ceviche for lunch is delivered on the beach with two large cold Cusquena beer.
We then spend a few more hours in the sun although I start to cover up a bit more as I realize I can’t compete with the burn resistance of Mica’s Puerto Rican skin.
When the sun starts to set we come back into town, shower and head to a great Peruvian chicken rotisserie place.
And because it’s a sleepy town we finish the night with a few cuba libres or chilcanos and Mica shares the Charlie Sheen meltdown story while I show her my guilty pleasure – Jersey Shore.
So it’s not much of an interesting post. You don’t need to worry that my life is all about discovering I hate hiking and Irish hostels.
Sometimes it’s perfectly lovely and boring.
Please try not to hate me for it.
Sometimes they are just the best times. When nothing really that spectacular is happening. Just good company, good food and a good beach! What else can you really ask for?!
I know just what you mean! Sometimes I’ve gotten to the end of a week and thought “OMG I have nothing to blog about!” And I like to do at least one post a week, if only for friends and family. It’s a challenge to make a post out of it, as you just did, though. Well done :=)
Yep I didnยดt eat anything crazy and nothing happened to me. Sometimes itยดs just going to be a breezy day post!
Nice weather… good company… good food… beach… oh come on, it’s perfectly acceptable not to have an unexpected twist for once! Glad you’re enjoying it!
Hehe Iยดll try to get food poisoning so I have something interesting to talk about. Although no photos!
I’d love to trade my boring days with your boring days lol.
I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself
Iยดm definitely not complaining, just wanted to let people know that every day isnยดt filled with obnoxious hostels and getting slapped with green paint!
Love the blog – the good, the bad and the boring!
LA
Iยดll work on making it less boring!
Was written tongue firmly in cheek! Your boring is my exciting.
I have been in exactly the same place…well kind of. The freaky-deeky fish was on Playa Blanca outside of Cartagena, CO. Same idea.
There is a time for everything “under the nomad sun.”
Mark
p.s. I love the Latin American apostrophe ๐ Tells me your really really there.
Ha yes, when Iยดm at Internet cafeยดs thereยดs no way around to get our apostophe – nice attention to detail amigo.
La dulce vida!
I have to say I have no complaints at all!
I hate you and your breezy life! (Not literally, just an over exaggeration for theatrical effect, okay?)
Haha – it’s so true! When we’re in an idyllic location (which has been pretty much all year so far), I often find it hard to write to an interesting angle. Don’t think any of your readers actually WANT you to have a bad time just for the writing, though ๐
Latin American sun is brutal! I’m currently shedding all my Irish skin onto a cafe floor right this moment…
I liked this post. It brought me a peaceful minute in a land of chaos.
Anygelina – why should you even worry what other s think… fuck’em ….en particulier pour les americains stupides qui ne savent pas comment se comporter correctement dans les pays d’ autres peuples … who WHORE-ship nothing because they know nothing other than what t.v or their illiterate politicians tell them … I wonder how many out of 300 mil know that the REAL Jefferson was a revolutionary – and a white guy too to boot! go figure…. – man, we only have a few brave crazy french guys in army here, but just those few would cause unspeakable destruction and havoc if ever unleashed – so watch out zio sam don’t piss off the Great White Bear ….this is priviledged info that only canadiens (the ‘e’ is in honour of our french heritage ) know and that’s why we’re welcomed the world over with open arms and get the best rates because we believe to get a little you have to give a whole lot !…..
Anygelina YOU had the balls to leave it all behind AND YOU are going through the expense of writing and educating the stay at home losers who say shit and do shit – so I really don’t think you as a writer should straight-jacket your TRUE OPINION AND BELIEFS for any misplaced fear of losing – for what is for the most part a sheepish public – who leave the same idiotic eulogistic thin comments anyway… you probably won’t post this comment and believe me my fellow canadian I can’t nor will I blame you ……but you will remember to do what you – above all – want to do….. a bientot ciao ciao
Wow overwhelmed with your comment, thanks Joseph.
These kinds of posts need to get written sometimes, though!
Otherwise people might think full-time travel is all chaos and rain and crappy hostels. ๐
The boring and simple travel days are part of the experience too.
I don’t hate you, I love you for it!! Your days sound like heaven…
Mica and I really had a great week, but who wouldn’t basking in the Sun and eating ceviche and cervesas on the beach.
Mmmmmm ceviche….GAWD, I MISS Latin American food!!! I think you’ve just inspired me to have a Latin American food week. ๐
Just wanted to say that it is nice at times that you do not upkeep this romanticized version of reality that is all sunshine and roses, and that every day hardships do happen, even when living/traveling abroad.
Thanks for being real, and being yourself
Thanks Justin although I think I may have gone too far and left people thinking I was becoming totally jaded. Little do they know I started out jaded.
Struggles do make for more interesting reading but I’m glad life is good.
Meeting you was truly awesome. Thank you for some amazing memories!! Beating boys up and getting lost in a nature park-let the good times roll. Going back there won’t be the same without you!
The is the perfect little beach picnic! I wish you tall and sturdy sandcastles and a cool, delicate breeze!
So glad to hear you’re having a fun time with some amazing food! It is definitely harder to write about “normal” activities than life’s challenges.
Life is about learning from the hard (and annoying and irritating) times and enjoying the good times.
So — enjoy the good times!
Not a boring post at all! i’m particularly enjoying the fish photo. We barbecued a couple yesterday and they turned out just like that…
Fried fish and orange juice for breakfast…that’s doing it right!
Lunch on the beach…life doesn’t get much better does it? =)
Having Ceviche by the beach? That’s a great idea and definely not boring. Looks like you guys had a wonderful time. I just had Ceviche last week but the weather in NYC was still cold.
Hang in there, the warm weather is coming!
I really need a beach day. The cold East Coast spring is starting to wear me thin. We are in Massachusetts right now visiting her family, and I’m really missing San Diego and Baja, Mexico, right now. Prior to your post, I had not heard of Mollendo, but its definitely the kind of place I’m longing for right now.
Yeah I’m also from the East Coast – but in Canada and I know how the winters can seem to just drag on.
Oh my gosh, I WANT one of those little beach tables!!! Looks amazing–although you do make a good point. The easy, breezy lifestyle doesn’t always make a great blog post–although I think this is an exception ๐
Aren’t these tables just perfect. The ONLY way to eat lunch on a beach.
Peruvian tan activation cream? I smell an As seen on TV smash! Import!
Ha, maybe I can make a living overseas!
Boring post? 40 comments? Do I have to say more??
I LOVE Jersey Shore. And I’m not ashamed. Ok, I’m a little ashamed, but it’s such a guilty pleasure!
I personally enjoy hearing about your boring days. It’s nice to hear stories about travel gone right ๐
Sometimes it’s wonderful to read about or experience good, wholesome fun!
Haha. Charlie Sheen and Jersey Shore. Last time I checked, Charlie Sheen was trending on Twitter (says tech news). It’s great you’re having fun ๐ Nothing beats a relaxing day at the beach.
Sometimes those relaxed and care-free days feel really good. I must say that a few cuba libres and a chicken dinner is a great way to end the day.
ooo we just got to Peru and can’t wait to get to the beach after Lima!
We tried the Cusquena beer for the first time yesterday and it was really nice, but very very frothy! If you put the bottle down slightly too hard you get covered in foam in seconds haha! Glad you’re having fun!
Yeah I have been drinking out of a glass and pouring it wrong so there is lots of foam which lessens the gas.
Maybe it wasn’t the most exciting week, but it sounds pretty nice. Travel is like life, sometimes action and chaos is needed, and other times you just need to a calm day.
Ahh, a nice break! Hope you find many more days like this one! ๐
Beach days are great days. Even better if you are people watching though!!
Ahhh! I feel more relaxed just reading this! But really, I think you should be hiking along the beach don’t you? ๐
We did trek about a km down the beach away from the speedo wearing lifeguards, that counts right?
Hehe, I’m glad to hear you are still having a wonderful time. ๐ You look so good in those pictures and really happy.
Ahh thanks, it really was a good time.
I love “boring” beach days! It’s yet another cold spell in NYC, argh.
True Iยดd rather be bored than cold!
Sounds like a perfect day!! ๐
Sounds perfect!
I wouldn’t say that life is boring….more like a dream come true! Love the write up and the pics even more!
