I’m in a bit of a silly mood today.
Although I dearly love my country and I am so proud to be Canadian I think I was born in the wrong place. This year I really thought spending winter in Toronto would be food for me but after 5 days on Maui I can see that the cold weather meant my spirit was in hibernation.
With less than a week of sun I feel like I am thriving. I have more energy, feel more relaxed and overall I am happier.
I feel younger.
Not that I’m old. I am happy to be 35 but the sun seems to shed things that were starting to weigh me down. It definitely has something to do with Maui. I haven’t reached my halfway point on this trip and I am already contemplating how I can return for a month next winter. I was really happy in Toronto but I think I need to focus on staying there in the warmer months and keep traveling in the colder months, at least January through April.
And I know this may be the cheesiest song in the history of summertime pop, but I still love summertime girl.
Welcome summer. I missed you.

I totally get the “I love Canada except for the weather” idea. Colorado and California have both improved my view of winter dramatically.
And I haven’t yet given up on the idea of living in Hawaii…
Although, to be 100% honest, I stopped the video after the “I love girls who wear Abercrombie..” line…

I sympathise with your comment about feeling more alive in the sun. While I love crisp white Canadian winters Hawaii seemed to soothe my soul and after a few days in the sun I felt more alive, refreshed and renewed than I had for a long time!
I know where you’re coming from! I joke that I’m solar powered because I have so much energy and feel more alive when it’s warm and the sun is shining. After a Newfoundland winter I’m spending my time longing for beaches and sunshine.
I so agree with you. Everything feels better in the sunlight. I remember how still the night would get around 7:30 when I was there with you the time before. Perfect weather in the day and perfect at night!
Being from California where sunshine was the norm, I also understand how sunny weather affects my disposition. I really appreciate warm temps, especially after the looooong winter we had here in Denver. Hawaii is the ultimate in that regard…even though we have great weather now here in Denver, I wish I was there in Maui, too!
I feel the same way. Though it doesn’t snow in Shanghai, it rains a lot in the winter and gets rather chilly. This past February we went to Cambodia and Laos for a few weeks and it was heaven! Enjoy your time in the sun!!
In a moment of weakness, I sometimes dream of a Canadian Christmas. Then I remember the last one; snowed in for 4 days. Living in Korea is no barrel of fun in the winter time either. That’s why I am out of here in December, almost before I click the send button to finalize student grades. The sun does makes us feel alive. I spend as much time as I can in hot countries during the cold of Canada and Korea.
35 is (rather, in my case, was) a fantastic age. The best. Almost. But besides that, I haven’t been to Hawaii, yet, but I can totally agree on the summer thing. Living in Stockholm, I think winters should be outlawd or something.
There’s something about sunshine. You can’t deny its healing quality. We normally like traveling in winter to escape New York’s harsh winter but some family issues kept us from going. It’s spring but we’re still not getting much sunshine. I can feel my spirit in deep hibernation. Glad Maui is bringing out the best in you.
I still cannot believe I haven’t been to Hawaii yet, gotta fix that.
Oh I hear ya. I am from Germany which has really cold winters, but lived in England for 8 years, which has horrible rainy winters. Now that I live in Cambodia with all the sun, I am definitely a more cheerful person. The sun makes such a difference!
I feel like I’ve had two summers followed by a winter, with another to come in New Zealand! Listening to cheesy songs like that one definitely help the SAD though. Good call!
