Helsinki, Finland

With only a few days left in Helsinki the first place I wanted to go was the Helsinki market or kauppatori in Finnish and salutorget in Swedish.

The Old Market Hall (Vanha Kauppahalli) was originally by waterfront but needed to be repaired so it was moved outside the downtown core.

In some ways it may be a good thing as it was once full of tourists coming from the cruise ships but now locals are returning to this one for lunch and food shopping.

I had heard I needed to go try the soup restaurant Soppakeittio and everyone was raving about the new oyster bar. I had such a good time there I missed a bunch of museums because I ended up spending all day there.

I also shot a lot of video.

This is my first attempt to shooting and editing video. It’s far from perfect, some things are blown out, the contrast is a bit much and I don’t like all the cuts.

But I have wanted to start shooting video for over a year and I have been putting it off because I knew the first videos would be terrible.

Finally I gave myself permission to have terrible videos. No one is great at anything as a beginner so the only way I’m going to get better is if I keep practicing.

Video is such a great way to share what a place is really like, I couldn’t have really explained the view from  Nasinneula revolving restaurant without showing the time lapse.

So it will be a rough start but here is my day at the Helsinki market.

It was one of my favourite travel Finland moments, but I also have so many more!

I really enjoyed your video-Blows our first attempt out of the water… 🙂 We’ve been wanting to incorporate more of our videos, but know they just aren’t up to par. I’m inspired that you gave yourself permission to have terrible videos (even if it’s not terrible at all)!

  2. The market looks SO pristine and clean! And, I like the video. I think it’s short and sweet!

  3. I wouldn’t leave. Nope.
They’d have to toss me out!

What a cool video! Finland was never part of my travel bucket list but after reading your articles I may just have to visit, if only for the food!

  5. The Helenski market is so clean and it seems fun to shop there. Btw, I enjoyed the background music… 🙂

A great video and I enjoyed watching it, although I’m a Finn myself and it wasn’t totally new to me… Finland is so much than just Helsinki, did you try our contryside and Finnish lakeland in Eastern Finland?

  14. Wow. so true of Helsinki. I was an exchange student at Aalto Univerisyt Autumn 2014 while studying in Sweden. I really enjoyed touring the city of Helsinki and its islands by train and even flighing balloon. I found Fins more open and straightforward than my quite reserved Swedish friends.
