I rarely take photos of myself when traveling. If I didn’t have this site I would have next to none because I always forget to take them and when people offer I usually decline.
I don’t know why that is but it’s something I really need to fix.
While waiting at the Quito airport my roommate Lorna showed me two photobooks on her iPad, one of her with landmarks around the world and one of her and animals of the world.
It spanned years and even though we were still basically strangers I loved looking through it.
I decided there I needed to do this as well and I would start with animals in the Galapagos.
It ended up being a fun aspect of the trip as Lorna needed photos with her around the world and I decided to call mine Ayngelina’s Wild Kingdom.
So here you go:
Sea lions lay around all day.
There is a bit of distance from me and this one in San Cristobal because you don’t want to get too close to the animals.
You know the first photo in this post? Well that baby sea lion nipped my leg two seconds later. Another reminder that these animals are not tame, just unafraid.
Me awkwardly trying to stand next to a blue footed booby without getting too close.
Here with a Sally Lightfood Crab, they are named this after a woman in Central America who would dance on tables for money in bars, apparently she could hop quickly from table to table just like these crabs.
An albatross, I feel bad about making jokes that they are bad luck because they are actually really pretty birds.
Not a great photo of the marine iguana but it counts!
Now it seems silly that I wasn’t doing this before. I’m going to keep it going and add one more: Ayngelina and food around the world. Although that is a rather lame title, I need to think of a better one. Any ideas?
I barely have any photos of me on my travels… I can’t be bothered when I’m on the move, especially if I’m by myself, but wish I had more afterward! Also, love the tidbit about the crab’s name 🙂
I am always shocked at how few photos I have, I am sure it’s common for people who travel a lot.
Love the picture of you imitating the sea lion!
I had to do it although this was right after a baby one bit me so I kept my distance.
I also have this issue of never getting photos of myself while I’m traveling… glad you’re making an effort to do something about it! And you’re off to a great start, I love love love the sealion photo! So adorable.
I always feel badly for couples too, they never seem to get photos together.
THe sea lion photo is my favourite idea. Love the idea, I too have few photos of me in front of the camera. Definitely think it’s a genetic thing as my mam is exactly the same. The fact that I’m awfully unphotogenic (not even exaggerating) doesn’t help either! However, I am now trying to make more of effort to take photos of me to record these moments that I’m sure I will kick myself for later when I’m older!
I cannot believe you are THAT unphotogenic. Take them now as you are the youngest you will ever be moving forward.
I like the sea lion, very cute. Very nice photos. I feel the freshness of the see.
Definitely lots of clean air there.
Love the photos Ayngelina, and the responsible warning about the sea lion pup biting you!
Who knew!
I never have many photos of myself. I always have to force my husband to take some, so I usually not bother. 🙂 I wish my arms were longer so I could take photos of myself that look more flattering and without me having a double chin.
I find couples rarely have photos together as one often takes photos of the other.
I’m with you! I rarely have any decent photos of myself from traveling. I always enthusiastically offer to photograph other people, but usually decline reciprocal offers. As I’ve started blogging/writing about my travels more, I’m realizing this is something I’ve gotta change. The first photo in your post is definitely my fav 🙂
I have turned down offers as well! I decided that from now on I will accept the offer, even if my hair is terrible I can always delete the photo later.
AYNGELINA EATS THE WORLD.
I love the photo of you lounging with the sea lion! It is really hard to take photos of yourself, especially ones that aren’t just selfies of your face and no background. I was just in 4 different cities in 12 days and I have very few photos of myself.
It’s time to start asking strangers. Or buy a pole…
should make more pictures on your travels
I really should.
Laughing because there are approximately 8 MILLION PICTURES of my children on my blog and like two of me. 🙂 I never want people to take my photo either.
Love this post a lot and think that the food idea is brilliant.
I think that is very common with parents. But you know I find even really young kids are great with cameras, you should get them to take a few snapshots as they would be more special that they took them.
The top photo is awesome! So cute. Last sea lion I got near grunted at me!
I had SO many grunt at me.
Love this idea Ayngelina. I spend all my time behind the camera, and like you, I don’t have very many photos of myself. It is something I am looking to rectify as well.
As for a title – Ayngelina’s Global Eats … or Ayngelina’s World Food Trail … a few ideas.
I like those suggestions. And yes you need to start taking more photos of yourself so at least when you are old and wrinkly you have something to remember when you weren’t.
Great photos! I used to be the same, and always declined having my picture taken, but after turning 30 a few years ago and realising I had very few photos of me in my 20s, I decided to stop caring and go for it. You’ll be glad you did too 🙂
It is wise, I’m not going to turn down offers anymore,
Fantastic photos! About 2 years ago I started having more pics of me taken. I still have fairly old photos on my facebook.
I like Rease’s idea for the food pictures. Another suggestion: “Ayngelina Grubs.”
There is something quite crude about Grubs that I like, good pick!
Okay, the picture of you the lying in the sand with the sea lion is freaking awesome. I’m totally going to steal this idea!
Do it!
I’m totally the same way. I never say ‘yes’ when people offer to take a picture of me because I’m in Southeast Asia and I’m a sweaty mess. So, most of my photos end up being landscapes and such. I should just get a little braver and take a picture without worrying how it’s going to turn out 🙂
I think you should still do it, in 40 years you will think you were a hot mess 🙂
You have to go more beautiful place. Look you seem very funny. Thanks for nice photos! Hope you have more beautyful memories!!!
Thanks so much!
This is incredible. The Galapagos is my dream trip, mainly because of all the wildlife. Sea lions are fascinating. How cool that you can get so close!
The wildlife is spectacular. I never thought I was much of an animal lover until I saw all of them here.
how about Ayngelina eats? And not only are you with the food in the photo but you are mid bite 🙂 haha
The most unattractive photos ever – awesome!
That first photo really caught my attention. I need to get to the Galapagos someday because I love animals. A lot.
Your kids would love it. While not all cruises allow children, some do and I saw quite a few while I was there.
That is so funny – I have 8000 photos from 15 months on the road and 4 of them have me in it! I have never been confident and find it very hard to look at myself. But I would hate to look back at my amazing life of travel in 20 years time and not see myself in any… so you have inspired me to stop being so silly and jump in front of the camera more often! Love all these photos btw!
Oh wow 4 is really bad! You may need to start your own wild kingdom.
This is such a great project. Like you I too often forget to take a selfie! I feel like such a fool posing in front of things, however it is so lovely to look back at yourself there in the moment. Great Wild Kingdom shots!!
We have photos of us individually, but we rarely have photos of my husband and I together from our travels.
For your food album, how about Ayngelina’s Awesome Bites?
An interesting fact about the Blue Footed Booby: Usually the Blue-footed Boobies have just one baby per pregnancy, but every once in awhile they have two. And when they do the stronger sibling usually pecks the brains out of the weaker one. Isn’t that nice!? Evolution.
I can’t believe how close you can get to the animals there!! I would be squealing like a little girl! I would also make my husband take a billion photos of me standing next to all of them to show my mom 🙂
I am the same! My boyfriend and I always return from a trip and realise we have NO PHOTOS of us! Luckily now we have an iPhone for a great selfie at opportune moments 🙂
You just now need to ask other people to take your photo so you are both in it!
I rarely get my photo taken. I do not like looking at photos of myself. These are great photos though.
I like how the sea lions let you know when you are too close. I was taking my shoes off to walk on the sand near some bushes and I heard their warning noise. I stopped to find out where it was coming from and a flipper came out from under the bush I was next to and slapped my leg. Glad it wasn’t a bite haha.
