While you can find plenty of American fast food joints in Cuenca, it wasn’t always that way. In fact, fast food as we know it didn’t appear in Ecuador until the 1990s.
But the idea of grabbing something fast is universal and so fast food in Cuenca has always existed – most often in the afternoon with a cup of coffee.

And so when Andres offered to take me on a food tour of Cuenca’s original fast food I couldn’t turn it down even though we only had 48 hours to eat it all.

They definitely take fast food to another level in that region. Much of the fare seems to have evolved from a mixture of influences from Europe, North America and the indigenous peoples. Great stuff!

Yum! I love a bit of fast food, especially in Ecuador where it’s warm enough to find a nice spot outside to enjoy it. I’m struggling with that in NZ at the moment!
At home I tend to eat exceedingly healthy just so when we are out or on travels we can eat what ever we like! A good fast food binge is so much fun…but boy do I pay for it afterwards!
